Just because defense is harder due to the rule changes, it's still as important as ever due to the fact that it's 50% of the game. Virtually every nba championship team in the last 10 years (this probably holds for the entire history of the nba, but i'm too lazy to look it up) was top 10 in BOTH offense and defensive ratings. I don't care how dirty James Posey is, get him on my team!

@ feetinthepaint
haha! yes of course.. bowen is not the only dirty player in the league. but his reputation is really tarnished with his dirty plays.. remember his kick to the face of szcerbiak? it's relatively normal give out hand-checks and some hip-checks, but bowen is way out of the line with all his kicking.. if he wants to use his feet, then maybe he should play football.

i didn't see the hornets-spurs game but i saw cp3's little flop play.. man that was nice.. haha! a little bump from bowen and he goes flying.. great flop..

Here's my challenge: record any game you can and pay attention to players away from the ball. I can guarantee to you that there's at least 2 fouls on any given play.

On a side note: did you catch the Hornets-Spurs game today? I didn't know that anyone could flop during time stoppage until Chris Paul did it today.

yes.. bowen gets you possessions, but bowen is a dirty player.. he maybe a good 1-on-1 defender, but he will definitely take cheap shots one way or another.

Definitely. And in simple terms -- the more ball possessions, the better. Bowen gets you possessions. Bowen makes you better.

In general, Basketball has 3 broad phases:

Offense - when your team has possession of the ball
Defense - when the opponent has possession of the ball
Rebounding - when possession of the ball is yet to be determined.

Defensive 'specialists' - like the ones you've referenced in your article - are vilified by those without a sophisticated understanding of how the game works and SHOULD be played, especially at the highest level of competition ... where all 3 phases need to be combined in a well-balanced way, in order to succeed against high calibre opponents.

Those with a sophisticated understanding of Basketball can appreciate the way a player like Bruce Bowen performs his job within an elite level NBA team.
